Woman accused of stealing sister-in-law’s jewellery

Kevlyn Veleme, 18, was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail after she denied a charge that she stole a quantity of jewellery from her sister-in-law.

On November 25, 2010, Veleme, of Lot 63 North Melanie Damishana, allegedly stole a gold chain, a gold ring and a gold band, all the property of her sister-in-law, Pearl Wiggins.

The jewellery was valued $195,000 in total.
Veleme pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, Veleme visited Wiggins’ home.

While Veleme was there, Wiggins left the jewellery on a table. Veleme is accused of picking up the items and leaving. When Wiggins discovered her jewellery gone, she made enquiries and the police were subsequently summoned, leading to Veleme’s arrest.

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, after hearing the allegations, granted Veleme bail and transferred the matter to Court Three for January 17, for reports and fixture.
