Bailed over church break-in

A man was yesterday placed on $125,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he appeared before her accused of  breaking and entering a church and stealing $926,500 worth of  items.

It is alleged that between January 22 and 23 at Georgetown, George Persaud  broke and entered the Covenant Church of God, a place of divine worship, and stole two video cameras, one computer and other items, all amounting in value to $926,500.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts as presented by prosecutor Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the day in question the church members secured the church and left for home. Sometime during the night, a member received a call stating that someone had broken into the church. When members went to the premises they  found the defendant in the act of stealing the said items. A report was made to the police, who subsequently arrested and charged the defendant.

Persaud was placed on $125,000 bail by the magistrate, who ordered him to return to court on February 10.
