Musician Rudy Bishop robbed after arrival in country

Musician Rudy Bishop was robbed by gunmen in Meadow Brook Gardens, Georgetown, hours after he arrived in the country.

Bishop, 65, had just arrived at the Wallaba Road residence where he had arranged to stay when he was attacked by two gunmen, a close friend told Stabroek News last evening. Leroy Prescott told this newspaper that hours after the man was robbed, he visited him.

Bishop, according to Prescott, made an early trip to Guyana to visit him after he discovered that he [Prescott] was unwell. “He was planning to come down here eventually but after he heard that I was sick, he decided to bring forward his ticket date so he could come see me,” Prescott said. “Is only this [yesterday] morning he visited me.”

The man said that Bishop told him that the car which he had arranged to collect him at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport could not make it. As a result, Bishop used a hire car from the airport to journey from Timehri to the Georgetown location.

Bishop, the man further recounted, told him that when he arrived at the Meadowbrook Gardens location, two men were across from the house waiting for him. Both of the men, Prescott said he learnt from his friend, were armed with guns. “He told me that the men walk up to him and point their guns to him and took away his briefcase,” Prescott said. “No, he didn’t say anything about them assaulting him or anything…everything happened quickly.”

Prescott further said that the man also told him that he believed that he was “trailed” from the airport to his final destination in Georgetown.

In a press release issued last evening, police said that they were investigating the incident. The robbery, according to them, occurred at about 2.30am. Bishop, they reported, was robbed of $30,000 cash, jewellery and documents. The two perpetrators, police said, escaped in a waiting motor car.

When Stabroek News visited the Meadow Brook Gardens location last evening, residents said that they were not aware that a robbery had occurred yesterday morning. However, several residents related that most of the streets in Meadow Brook Gardens are poorly lit and are empty in the evenings. “People does get robbed in these parts a lot,” one man, who declined to have his name published, told Stabroek News. “Last week [name of woman] get stick up and they took away her bag and snatch off her chain.”
