Accused in Moruka River murder remanded

Hillary Amos, the man accused of murdering 25-year-old miner Fabian George, was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Amos is that on April 26, at Moruka River, North West District, he murdered George. The accused was not required to plead to the capital offence after it was read to him.

In presenting the prosecution’s facts of the case, prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, the deceased and another person were involved in a fight. He said that the defendant, who claims that George stole $50,000 from him, left the scene of the fight, armed himself with a cutlass and returned and chopped George to his back.

George later died.

The matter was transferred to the Akwero Magistrates’ Court and Amos was remanded to prison until July 5.

The incident, police reported in a statement, occurred at about 1.30pm. According to the statement, George died after been fatally chopped following an argument. At the time of the incident, police also reported that George and his attacker had been consuming alcohol together.
