Man accused of setting brother alight remanded on murder charge

The man accused of murdering his younger brother after throwing a lit stove on him was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Errol Cornelius was not required to plead to the capital offence which states that on May 3 at Karrau, Mazaruni he murdered Orin Cornelius.

In presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the accused was cooking when he got into an argument with his brother over a CD player. During the argument, Telford said, Errol took the pot off the stove and threw the stove on his brother.

The court then heard that after the incident, the injured man was rushed to the Bartica Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he later died.

Errol Cornelius, a chainsaw operator, was remanded to prison and his case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for May 19.

Reports are that Orin was severely burnt about his body after the stove was hurled at him, causing him to become engulfed in flames. Eugene Cornelius, father of the men, was also injured during the incident.
