Suspect in Mowasi shopkeeper murder fled after confession

Police are looking for a man named “Charlie” who had reportedly told his employers that he shot Montague Small dead and then fled from the Mowasi Backdam, Konawaruk area.

Stabroek News was told that the suspect, after shooting Small in the head early Tuesday morning, went to a nearby camp and told his “boss” that he had killed the 53-year-old shop keeper. Before his employers could seek help to arrest him, the man fled the area.

Meanwhile, Small’s remains arrived in Georgetown yesterday and are at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour, awaiting a post mortem examination scheduled for today.

Police had said that the businessman was killed around 2am. Investigations, they said, revealed that residents responded to what sounded like a gunshot, and on checking later found Small in his shop with a gunshot wound to his head. The building had been ransacked. The residents also found a .32 snub nose revolver with two rounds and a spent shell along a trail.

The police were informed and subsequently visited the scene, where the firearm and ammunition were handed over to them.
