GDF officer gets self-bail on charges he assaulted three cops

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted self bail to the Guyana Defence Force lieutenant accused of assaulting three police officers in an incident related to the June 19 assault on DJ Nerissa Pearson, for which he also stands accused.

Nineteen-year-old Denzil Mingo, of 393 Third Street, Alberttown pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was yesterday read to him in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. The allegation is that on September 9, at Brickdam, Denzil Mingo assaulted Glenroy Campbell, Quincy Anderson and Rondel Gouveira. Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey, told the court that on the said day, the accused behaved disorderly when he was placed in custody. Harvey also told the court that when the officers cautioned Mingo about his behaviour he spat on them and used indecent language towards them.

Mingo was ordered to return to court on October 6. On June 19, at Cross and Leopold streets, Georgetown, the lieutenant allegedly assaulted Pearson. It is alleged that on the same day, he used threatening behaviour to Donella Bruely thereby resulting in a breach of the peace. The accused denied both charges when the magistrate read them to him during a previous appearance at court and he was granted $20,000 bail.
