Two years jail for guard who stole GFC laptop

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo sentenced a security guard attached to the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) to two years jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter and larceny.

Police Inspector Donna Grant Fraser told the New Amsterdam Court that on September 29, Renawattie Baskalie, an employee of the GFC at Fort Canje, secured her Compaq laptop computer in her office and thereafter lodged the key at the guard hut, where Selwyn Evans was on duty.

Evans, of Lot 11 Smythfield, used the key to gain entry into the building and stole the computer. The computer was valued $199,000.

When the court gave Evans an opportunity to defend himself, he admitted guilt and regret over the incident and pleaded for mercy.
