Linden group hosts ‘run-walk-jog’ to promote cancer awareness

A Linden cancer awareness group plans to close a month of observances with a ‘run-walk-jog’ around central Mackenzie tomorrow.

The 11-year-old Women On the Move (WOM) is hoping to attract scores of participants by putting a number of prizes up for grabs in the various categories.

President of WOM Judy Gravesande-Noel said the activity was exclusively for women, but over the years men came out to support their partners and as a result steps were taken to include them and eventually children..

WOM is encouraging the public to support the activity, which has as its main objective educating persons about cancer. “Most importantly, we want persons to know that early detection saves lives. Once you know early, it can be treated, assuring you of long life,” Gravesande-Noel said.

The activity will start in front of the Linden Enterprise Network building and proceed along Republic Avenue into Purple Heart Street then into Independence Avenue, then into Sir David Rose Avenue before turning back onto Republic Avenue, before concluding at the start point. “At the ending, we have a little programme with the resource person being Dr Riyasat who’s going to be telling us all about cancer,” Gravesande-Noel explained.

There will be prizes for participants, including survivors, those who are differently-abled and the heaviest finisher.

WOM is also inviting male and female cancer survivors to make themselves known as they will receive special prizes. “So far we have three survivors who have come forward and we are encouraging others to come out,” Gravesande-Noel said.

WOM is also extending an invitation to individuals, groups and organisations outside of Linden to participate. The incidence of cancer is said that be relatively high in Linden, with a fair number of persons having had the disease detected in its early stages. terested persons can register for tomorrow’s event at the Linden Museum on Co-op Crescent Mackenzie. Registration costs $300
