A Matthews Ridge, North West District resident was beaten to death with a spade on Sunday, after he was accused of stealing a phone.
According to police, the incident occurred at Black Banana, Matthews Ridge, North West District, where Raymond Roberts, 25, of Child Hill, was fatally beaten with a spade. A suspect is in custody.
According to a source in the area, the incident arose over a stolen phone, which went missing while Roberts and some others were working in a pit at a mining camp. The source said that on the day of the incident, someone reportedly left their cellular phone in the pit and Roberts allegedly confiscated it, for which he was severely beaten by two men.
This newspaper was told that his hands and feet were broken in the beating.
The source said that one of the suspects is in police custody, while Robert’s body is at the Matthews Ridge Hospital Morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.
