Orealla Regatta on today

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce says the third annual Orealla Regatta is being held today in the Region Six community.
Minister Manniram Prashad said the fete is being held in conjunction with Cortours Incorporated which will host several speed boat and other competitive activities.

“We are promoting Orealla Regatta because we feel that tourism must not be limited to one particular area… This is something that Guyanese who once lived in the Berbice area can return to their home country and look forward yearly, as it has now become part of the Ministry’s calendar of events,” Prashad said. He also noted that it is hoped that over time this activity will attract patrons  like the Rockstone festival in Region Ten, which like Rewa in Region Nine and Cow Falls is also a hotspot for sport fishing.

The fete, which is being held during Tourism Awareness month, is part of the ministry’s Calendar of Events and it is expected to attract scores of participants and spectators from Georgetown and other parts of the country as well as from neighbouring Suriname and French Guiana. Prashad said the activities will help to boost tourism in the community, which has about 1,500 residents.

Managing Director of Cortours Motee Singh said plans are in train to host a number of fun-filled activities such as canoe races, cassava grating competitions, greasy pole climbing, canoe tug-o-war and cultural activities.
