Destra to go on with PPP ‘Unity’ show

The PPP/C’s hiring of Trinidadian soca artiste Destra for its final rally today has ignited a firestorm with objections raised by other political parties resulting in the artiste shutting her Facebook page but despite this, she will be here.

Dubbed ‘Unity,’ PPP/C spokesman Robert Persaud said that the event is for “cooling down and retrospection.” At a press briefing yesterday, he denounced the comments made about the artiste. The PPP/C’s final rally and concert will be held at the Providence Stadium.

“We are pleased  that despite Destra having to shut down her web pages and while we register our disgust about the comments on Destra’s website, putting likes to violence… that she will be in Guyana and  performing at tomorrow’s  Unity, ” said Persaud. He added that Destra was chosen for the event because the party understood that Guyana’s culture is heavily tied to the Caribbean and they wanted to incorporate facets of the Caribbean culture. Other cultural events are planned, in addition to addresses by candidates of the party.

Persaud emphasized that the event was not only a rally but also a celebration of Guyana’s diversity. He said that although it is his party’s wish to see all supporters of the event aligning with the PPP/C, it is a national event and persons from any political party are invited and would be welcomed at the affair which  “aims to unify and set an atmosphere of peace,” in preparation for Monday’s general and regional elections.
