GTTA invited to send team to Suriname

The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has been invited to participate in a promotional tournament in Suriname next month.

President of the GTTA, Henry Greene, DSM, Saturday night told this newspaper that his association had received an invitation from the Suriname Table Tennis Association (STTA) to send a delegation of seven to eight players for the March 23-28 tournament.

According to Greene, who is also the Commissioner of Police, the STTA is requesting the GTTA facilitate assistance in the form of clinics to upgrade the skills of the Surinamese players.

The GTTA is to decide on the invitation.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Stephen Belle, father of table tennis twins’ sensation Brandon and Brad opposed Greene in a charity match which was won 3-2 by Greene.

The match was held to raise the sum of $300,000 which will go into the coffers of the GTTA, a release from GTTA vice president and former Top Gun, Harold Hopkinson stated.

Greene also on Sunday received a courtesy call from former national table tennis  and Department of Sport coach Ashton Arthur who is back home on a short holiday.

Green and Arthur, who competed against each other early on in their respective careers, discussed several issues pertaining to the development of the sport locally according to information reaching Stabroek Sport.
