Warner embraces Shiv’s wise counsel

PERTH, Australia, CMC – Australia opener David Warner hailed sage advice from West Indies batting machine Shivnarine Chanderpaul following his second Test hundred against India yesterday.

Warner reached his milestone from just 69 balls – the same number for Chanderpaul against Australia nine years ago in his native Guyana.

But Warner, known more for his free-hitting exploits in Twenty20, the shortest version of the game, said he formed a greater appreciation for the virtues of playing longer innings from the durable West Indies left-hander.

“I learnt this off Chanderpaul when we were at Durham,” Warner said of his stint in county cricket. “He batted on the bowling machine for six hours.

“I said ‘this is ridiculous, how can you do this’, and he said ‘if you’re going to bat for six hours in a game, you might as well practise it’.”

Warner made 180 to give Australia a first innings lead of 208, after they had dismissed India for 161 in their first innings on Friday’s opening day.

India were 88 for four at the close on the second day at the Western Australia Cricket Arena.
