East Coast contractor fleeced client of home repair funds -court hears

A contractor was on Thursday admitted to bail in the sum $100,000 after he was charged with short-changing his client by using funds given to him to repair her home and purchasing insufficient materials for the job.

The allegation against John Carlos Peters is that on December 16, at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Verlene McAndrew with $500,000 in order to purchase construction materials to repair her house, he fraudulently converted $195,920 to his own use.

The Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara resident denied the charge of fraudulent conversion when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question, McAndrew handed over $500,000 to Peters but later checks revealed he had taken a portion of that sum. Additionally, the court heard that an inadequate amount of materials was bought to get the job done.
After listening to the case, the magistrate granted the accused bail and the case was transferred to Court Ten for January 17.
