There should be a consensus approach to governance

Dear Editor,

In a letter captioned ‘No one has the right to the Speaker’s chair‘  published by Stabroek News on January 17, I highlighted the fact that there needs to be a meeting of minds in the governance of this country. This principled call goes out to all the parties involved on the government side as well as the opposition. The government from past experience would want to argue that they are willing to do so but the opposition forces will not yield an inch. Be that as it may, judging from the way the electorate spoke on November 28 there must be a consensus approach, and not the go-it-alone by the governing party as was the case in previous times; things have changed.

Discussions on the Budget are soon to be held following which a vote has to be taken. I can see an interesting situation developing here whereby the governing PPP/C must call on the support of the opposition to have safe passage of motions and bills.

From all indications the votes will have to come from the AFC. I would advise the President not to resort to the sarcasm and ‘bad mouthing‘ attitude of his predecessor, because help will have to come from those he maligns.

Yours faithfully,
Neil Adams
