Child care officials probing Region One teen pregnancies

Officials of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the impregnation of two Region One teens.

A source said yesterday that both girls and their newborns will soon be taken into the protective custody of the agency.

The agency will be working with the police to find the perpetrators as the girls are both under the age of consent, which means they were victims of statutory rape, the source said.

Stabroek News was earlier told that the agency has at least seven other teens from several interior regions who are in a similar position. Once in the agency’s care, the young mothers are given an opportunity to return to school.

One of the girls aged 13 was air-dashed to the city from the Port Kaituma Hospital after she developed complications while giving birth at the Port Kaituma Hospital.

The child who hails from a riverain community apparently remained unconscious following a Caesarean Section and was initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a city hospital. She was later transferred to the open ward.

The other girl, said to be 14 years old, was transported to the city in a pregnant state and she later delivered her baby.

Hospital sources said both girls are now in stable condition.
