Eighteen months for stealing GWI sewerage cover

Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton yesterday sentenced a man to 18 months jail after he admitted stealing a sewerage cover from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

According to the facts of the case, on January 23, at Georgetown, Christopher Macey stole the item, valued $75,000, the property of GWI. He admitted the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the said day, at 6.30pm, a security guard at the Body Max Fitness Gym noticed the cover missing after conducting a search. Subsequent investigations led the guard to a Sussex Street, Charlestown iron yard where he spoke to the caretaker there who later pointed out the defendant as the person who took the item to the yard.

Macey was arrested and charged with the offence. When given a chance to speak, he calmly told the court, “I committed the offence.”

He then asked the Magistrate for a lenient sentence.
