Attempted murder of cops case adjourned to February 3rd

The formal closure by the prosecution in the case for which Colin Jones, Randy Mars, Jafar Simpson, Anthony Watson and Basil Morgan are accused of attempting to murder Police Constable Rajindra Singh and Police Detective Damintra Indarpaul has now been adjourned to February 3.

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who is presiding over the matters, on Friday informed the court that while she has begun perusing the file, she is not yet finished as it is a very thick file. Additionally, she said she has been busy over the past week. Apologizing to the defendants for another adjournment, the magistrate said that by February 3, she will be ready.  She emphasized that she wanted to ensure that the entire file is properly perused for the sake of tidiness.

On that day, the court will also entertain submissions from defence attorneys.

Meanwhile, when asked, the prosecution once again said that it remains ready to close its case in the matter.

On January 18, Friday’s date was granted  for the formal closure by the prosecution in which time the magistrate said that she would have perused the file for that occasion.

On December 2, 2010 Jones was charged with murdering two of his former gang members and another man and was jailed for eight years on a series of other charges, including cultivation of ganja and possession of an unlicensed weapon and ammunition.

Jones was jointly charged along with Mars and Simpson for discharging a loaded firearm, murder, attempted murder and setting fire to a building.

Among the other charges levelled against Jones are murder, attempted murder and escaping lawful custody.
