DEMTOCO appoints new Managing Director

The Demerara Tobacco Company Limited (DEMTOCO) on Friday bid goodbye to Chandradat Chintamani and announced the appointment of Malissa Sylvester as Managing-Director designate at a farewell and welcoming cocktail function hosted at the Pegasus Hotel.

According to Marcus Steele, Director of DEMTOCO, Chintamani joined British American Tobacco in June 2000 and has played a major role in leading a successful team in the creation of shareholder value over the years.  He was said to have increased DEMTOCO’s visibility to key stakeholders, which allowed it to earn its right at key decision making tables in Guyana. The company will continue to receive Chintamani’s support in his capacity as a Non-Executive Director.

Steele further stated that while the team is saddened to lose Chintamani, they look forward to welcoming Sylvester and noted that the Board has every confidence in her ability to excel in her new role.

Sylvester is a Trinidadian national who was most recently the Trade Marketing and Distribution Manager for West Indian Tobacco Company Limited (WITCO), Trinidad and prior to that appointment, Brand Marketing Manager for Carreras Limited, Jamaica; both companies a part of the British American Tobacco Group.

In a press release, Sylvester, who has lived and worked in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, said that now that she will have the profound pleasure of working in the “land of many waters,” she considers herself a true daughter of the Caribbean.

At the farewell and welcoming cocktail function, Sylvester asked to be judged by her actions as she promised to continue to ensure that Demerara Tobacco meets and surpasses the expectations of a responsible tobacco company in Guyana.

She further assured that ownership, accountability and delivery to shareholders and customers will continue to be the hallmark of operations

The Board of Directors also expressed sincere thanks to Chintamani, for his sterling service to Demerara Tobacco over the past decade.
