Ensure water for domestic use is safe – GWI

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is advising residents along the coast to take steps to ensure that they have safe water for domestic use.

In a press release the company advises the public to ensure that all tap water intended for food and drink preparation and personal consumption (brushing teeth) is boiled for 15 minutes. “Ensure that boiled water, whilst cooling before use, is stored in a tightly covered container,” GWI said.

Alternatively, water can be made safe by using household bleach: add three to four drops of bleach to each gallon of water, mix well and allow to stand for 30 minutes before use. Ensure that treated water is stored in a tightly covered container. The company also advises customers to promptly repair all leaking pipelines within their premises.

GWI also says the public should practice rainwater harvesting.

To avoid contamination, allow water to run off from the roof for about 30 minutes and ensure a mesh cloth is placed over the container before water collection.
