Crabwood Creek woman’s throat slit during robbery

A Crabwood Creek woman was last evening in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam hospital, after she was brutally attacked by a lone intruder at a Corentyne rice depot.

Reports are that around 3:30pm yesterday, Jaiwantie Sharma, a mother of two, was attending to a customer at Wazir’s Top Quality Rice Depot, located two buildings away from the Springlands Police Station, when the ‘customer’ attacked her with a knife.

The woman sustained a deep cut to her throat as well as two cuts to the forehead and her fingers. Her daughter, Vidya Sharma, told Stabroek News last evening that her mother was slipping inand out of consciousness and according to her the woman appeared pale and weak. She said her mother lost a considerable amount of blood while she was “barely saying anything much because she is getting a hard time breathing.”

The wounded woman’s employer Wazir Dilchan told this newspaper last evening that Sharma was working alone at the rice depot, which is situated at a shopping mall at Springlands. He said that he was in the upper flat of the building at the time and he noted that someone raised an alarm, following which the bandit escaped into a street in the area. He said that the woman related to him that she was preparing to sell two bags of rice to the man when he pounced on her and demanded the day’s takings.

Dilchan said that the intruder “hold she by the mouth and he put the blade to her neck and demand the money.” He added that the woman struggled with the intruder and he later proceeded to beat her and slashed her throat in the process. Sharma was found lying in a pool of blood.

The matter was subsequently reported to the nearby police station and police ranks later scoured the area for the man but he managed to escape. Dilchan said that the bandit escaped with the woman’s personal belongings as well as a quantity of cash which she had in her possession. He said earlier in the afternoon Sharma deposited money on behalf of the business at a nearby bank.

The woman’s daughter noted that her mother’s 50th birthday is today. She added that the family was still coming to grips with the loss of her brother, who died a year ago.
