Relief council assists victims of Timehri fire, Buxton tree falling

The Guyana Relief Council (GRC) on Friday handed over kitchen utensils, groceries and other items to seven families who suffered losses due to fire at Timehri and a Buxton family whose home was demolished when a tree fell on it.

According to a press release from the council, each family that lost his/her home in the January 31 fire at Timehri was given the items as well as clothing in amounts according to their needs. The families had also been offered temporary accommodation at the GRC Shelter but they had opted to stay with relatives and friends in the Timehri area as most of them worked there.

Members of the GRC’s Welfare Committee hand over donations for the Timehri fire victims.

In the meantime, Lorna Glen and her family of eight are being housed at the Shelter, where all of their basic needs are being provided by the charity. Glen’s home was destroyed when a plum tree fell on it during heavy rainfall, smashing it to pieces.

For the year, to date the GRC has provided assistance to 15 families, comprising 63 persons who experienced losses due to disaster. However, it said that it depends on the generosity of businesses and the public to be able to facilitate the speedy and timely delivery of assistance to persons in need.

Persons desirous of assisting in its humanitarian efforts are encouraged to contact the GRC at telephone numbers 225-3081 or 225-2874.
