Shot yard intruder jailed for theft

Carlos Grant, who was shot after he was found in a man’s yard last month, was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stealing $75,000 in articles.

Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton handed down the sentence to Grant at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that on January 28, at Waterloo Street, Grant stole articles from virtual complainant Patrick DeFreitas.

Grant, after pleading guilty, told the court that he went into DeFreitas’ yard in the company of a friend to smoke “weed.”

The man added that while he was in the yard, “I saw a man lick two shots and one catch meh in meh left leg.”  Grant’s leg was in a medical gypsum plaster when he appeared in court.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, meanwhile, told the court that DeFreitas had secured his premises and around 1:30 in the afternoon he heard a strange noise, which aroused his suspicion.

He decided to make checks in his yard and found the accused standing in his compound. DeFreitas drew his firearm and ordered the accused to stop.

Grant, however, advanced towards DeFreitas, who discharged a round at him.

The injured Grant was detained by the man and was taken to the police station, where he was later charged.
