Magistrate Allan Wilson yesterday remanded to prison two men accused of having 160 grammes of cannabis in their possession when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge.
The court heard that Randy Norton, a miner of Lot 1 Rasville, Georgetown and Mark Henry, 25, of Lot 61 Public Road, Kitty, allegedly had 160 grammes of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking at the said Rasville location. The two men who were charged jointly, pleaded not guilty.
Their attorney, Adrian Thompson, told the court that the narcotics were not found on his clients but in a building occupied by several persons. He said this may constitute the special reason why his clients should be granted bail. Further, he told the court that neither of his clients gave any oral or written statement to police indicating that the narcotics had been found on them and that the police had alleged that the drugs had been found on the premises.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey strongly objected to bail on the grounds that no special reason had been given to the court for it. He also pointed out that if any special reason is given it should be applied to the offence and not the offender.
Harvey also said that police had questioned the two accused about whether they had control of the premises at the time when the narcotics were found and allegations were put to them that neither of them denied. The prosecutor then told the court that on the day in question, based on information received, the lawmen went to Lot 1 Rasville Georgetown. They saw the two men and identified themselves after which they explained the reason for their visit.
The officers then searched the premises and a quantity of seeds, leaves and steams suspected to be cannabis was found.
The magistrate then remanded the men and ordered them to appear in court on March 7.
