St Rose’s student shot for cell phone

A 17-year-old St. Rose’s High School student was shot to her left shoulder during a robbery yesterday around 19:05 hours on Thomas Street, Kitty.

Fifth former Sasha Gilhuys, niece of former magistrate and attorney-at-law Gordon Gilhuys, had just left her Spanish lessons with two friends when she was approached by three men on bicycles.

A relative told media operatives at the Georgetown Public Hospital that the girl was texting on her Samsung cellular phone while walking along the road when she was attacked.

Her teacher, Veronica Narine, told this newspaper that though the class finishes at 8:00 pm, the three students requested to leave early and she was made to understand that they were going home by minibus.

“Two of them were with her, the others were with me still, normally I’d finish at 8 o’ clock but they left early. Her dad told her to catch a taxi but she said no she is going with her friends to catch a bus,” she said.

A few minutes after, Narine continued, one of the girls returned in a frantic state and announced that Gilhuys was shot.

The teacher stated that according to the information she received, the teenager did not resist when the demand for the cellular phone was made but was left in shock and before given the opportunity to hand over the device, one of the men reached into a haversack and pulled out the weapon, shooting the student to the shoulder.

Narine said the students brought her back into the yard before her husband rushed her to the city hospital for treatment.

Shortly after being discharged from the hospital, Gilhuys was seen speaking with relatives and friends who had gathered there. A relative told this newspaper that she is expected to return to the GPH for possible surgery to have the bullet removed.
