Gunmen in Bourda Market robbery still at large

The gunmen who wreaked havoc at Bourda Market last Wednesday, shooting and injuring one person after robbing two others of cash and jewellery remain at large.

A police official told this newspaper that investigators have received no information as to who the gunmen are, but work is continuing on the ground to pick up clues.

Around 22:45 hrs on the day in question, three unmasked men had attacked vendors Errol Gardner, 43 years, and his wife Thakurdai Persaud, 42 years of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara who were in their Canter truck.

A terrified Gardner had recounted that his wife, after she was finished selling, had decided to take a nap in the cabin of the Canter while he continued selling. He said that around 22:30 hrs he started to pack up. He said that at some point something fell off his scale as he was lifting it into the truck. “Is while I bending down to pick up this thing I feel like somebody come and shove something in meh side and seh don’t move, pass all the money,” he said noting that he was at the front right hand side of the vehicle which made it very difficult for persons along North Road to see what was happening. Also at that time, a vehicle was nearby playing very loud music.

He said he turned around and said “buddy is wha happen to yuh”, which resulted in him being hit in his head with a gun. The gunman, he recounted instructed him to pass all the money and the gold. The man started to empty Gardner’s pockets of the cash he had made for the day. They also took his gold ring of around 20 pennyweights of gold and two gold chains.

According to him, one of the gunmen opened the Canter door and on seeing his wife, gun butted her numerous times.

Saheed King of Maida, Corentyne, Berbice who was earlier helping Gardner to pack up was standing nearby and at some point during the robbery a round was discharged in his direction.

The men then fled the scene.

Stabroek News was told yesterday that King remains a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital and his condition is listed as stable.

Following the incident, numerous calls were made for police protection at the market.
