Investigation ordered into case of accused being in prison at time of armed robbery

A man who is currently serving a three-year sentence pleaded not guilty yesterday to an $805,000 armed robbery that occurred while he was incarcerated.

Luis Hopkinson was yesterday brought to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer a charge of robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon.

It was alleged that on December 24, 2011 in Georgetown being armed with a dangerous weapon he robbed one Mr Deochand of jewellery and a cell phone, a total of $805,000 in value.

The defendant pleaded not guilty and then explained that he is currently serving a three-year sentence in prison so it was impossible for him to be the person who committed the crime.

He said that he has been incarcerated since September 22, 2010 so he doesn’t know what’s going on.

The magistrate asked the prosecution to verify the defendant’s claim and according to the records it was substantiated.

The magistrate then immediately ordered an investigation stating that she could not proceed with such a case.
