Testimony at Neesa Gopaul PI brings tears

The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the death of Neesa Gopaul continued yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The girl’s mother, Bibi Gopaul, and Jarvis Small, the mother’s lover, are accused of murdering the schoolgirl in late 2010. Following the discovery of a number of articles at the crime scene at a creek near Emerald Towers Resort along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway the mother and her lover were arrested and later charged.

Special Constable Jennifer Sumra was again called to the stand following her last appearance when she gave evidence on November 23, 2010. Following Sumra was Assistant Superintendent Terrence Paul of the Leonora Police Station Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He last gave evidence in this case on December 23, 2010.

The number two accused Jarvis Small appeared upset during the day’s proceedings as his lawyer was absent at a critical time.

The court adjourned for an hour after ASP Paul testified then resumed at about 13:30 hrs with the testimony of Simone De Nobrega, a businesswoman of Lot 1011 Phase 2 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara.

This particular witness stirred emotions in Gopaul as she began shaking her head and at one point was seen wiping her eyes.

The PI is adjourned until tomorrow and continues everyday for the remainder of the week.
