Puran granted 3 days to respond to Hughes in treason PI

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday granted state appointed prosecutor, attorney Vic Puran, a three-day adjournment to respond to written submissions made by defence attorney Nigel Hughes during the treason case preliminary inquiry.

Puran told the court the written submissions made by the defence were of substantial merit.

During the proceedings, accused Carol Ann Munroe got very upset when Puran requested ten days. She stood up and spoke and later suffered an asthma attack.

Accused of treason are Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol Ann and ex-soldier Leonard Wharton. The charge states that between December 1, 2009 and December 16, 2010, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, they plotted to level war within Guyana to force the president out of office, in order to compel the Government of Guyana to change its measures.

The PI is being heard by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and continues on Monday.
