Berbice man jailed for five years over fondling

West Coast Berbician Rayon Eastman was yesterday sentenced to five years imprisonment after he fondled a fellow villager without her consent.

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed the sentence on Eastman, of Number 30 Village, who said he was “making a joke with the victim.”

At the time of the incident, on March 9, the victim, 34, was riding her bicycle along the community road. Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, told the New Amsterdam Court that Eastman called out to the woman as she cycled past and indicated that he wanted to have sex with her.

The woman continued on her way, but Eastman ran alongside her, touching her breasts, buttocks and legs.

The virtual complainant immediately rode to the Fort Wellington Police Station and made a report.

Figueira reminded the court of the seriousness of the offence, which was laid under the new Sexual Offences Act and urged the magistrate to impose the appropriate sentence to send a message to the wider community.
