Man remanded over Mazaruni gun, drug finds

Stanley Clement was yesterday remanded to prison after being arraigned on weapons and drug possession charges.

Clement, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, was refused bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman on charges that he was found with a Taurus revolver and 68 rounds of ammunition as well as 875 grammes during a police search on March 15, at Mousie Backdam, Mazaruni.

Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall said that accused allegedly observed the ranks in the area conducting a search and he threw something from his waist into a nearby bush. The item was found to be a black plastic bag containing leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis.

Further investigations, he added, led to the recovery of the other items.

All the articles and suspicions were brought to his attention and Clement allegedly admitted ownership to the police and he was subsequently arrested and charged.

The prosecutor objected to bail and the magistrate agreed and transferred the case to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for April 18.
