AFC has to help force the PPP/C towards National Unity Government

Dear Editor,

The motion by the PPP/C on the President’s speech to Parliament is another antic to cloud the dim reality of life in Guyana – and is nothing more than a Vote of Confidence in themselves. It is another attempt to “show up” the combined opposition in  parliament – as a bunch of “trouble-makers” -if there were to vote against it. But they have failed – once again and are looking really foolish. The opposition is much cleverer than they think.

The highlight of the day was Moses Nagamootoo, a traditional PPP, now wearing the clothing of the AFC. He stole the show by seriously criticising President Ramotar for not “seizing the  moment” and setting out the framework for a National Unity Government (NUG).

I am convinced that had the PPP membership gotten the opportunity to select their presidential  candidate for the PPP, Nagamootoo would have been the President today and Guyana would have enjoyed immediate and immense progress – under such a government.  Moses’ greatest weakness is his slothfulness and his inability to be consistent and be determined as rock.

Nagamootoo’s contribution towards the motion – is in line with the overwhelming number of Guyanese who believe that we are poised to take off – only if we are able to unite around the main issues that affect all of us. He must now subject the AFC leadership to submit to an agenda for the national good. Can he do that, yes he can.

The APNU – the biggest coalition in Guyana has repeatedly called for a National Unity Government  and will do everything in its powers to mobilise every Guyanese in and out of Guyana for such a government. The AFC  has to openly begin this dialogue to force the PPP into such a conversation.

In the coming weeks and months – the PPP regime will experience its greatest test – if it fails to unite the country and evolve a broad-based government – involving the widest possible sections of our people, it will be doomed to failure.

Yours faithfully,
Jinnah Rahman
