Guyana, Suriname veterans draw encounter

Guyana Beacons Masters and their Suriname counterparts played out to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition over 40 football match, at the Tucville Community Center Ground on Saturday evening.

In a fairly low-key atmosphere played in front a sparse crowd, the veterans on the respective sides played the game to the boundaries of their age limit.

The Surinamese veterans opened the scoring 10 minutes before the end of the first half interval, when in trying a clear a corner kick – Sherwin Enfoa scored in the 35th minute.

This was to be the only goal of the first period and the Surinamese went into the break with a slender advantage. Play in the second half ebbed and flowed in the direction of both teams as each outfit pressed forward for more goals. With less than 10 minutes of regulation time to go, the Suriname’s defence was still standing firm against the home side‘s pressure until the home side equalized.

After one of the mid-fielders stole the ball in mid-field, the Beacon Masters broke away with pace, crossing the ball onto the right-flank, then back into the 18-yard box where former national Terrence `Old Head’ Lewis prodded home the equaliser.

In assessing the game, player/coach of Beacons Masters over-40 unit Gordon Braithwaite, stated:“It was a good game, clean game that was played in a good spirit. Given that it was an over 40 match, it wasn’t your typical football game of high pace and aggressive tackles. The fellas basically played within their age limitations. But we certainly are looking forward to more games like this in the future,” Braithwaite said.

Saturday’s game was a pit stop for the Surinamese over-40 team which is currently on tour.
