APNU, AFC in talks on vacant Gecom seat

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) are in talks to decide on an opposition nominee to fill the now vacant seat on the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) left by the demise of commissioner Robert Williams some weeks ago.

This is according to Dr Rupert Roopnaraine of APNU, who spoke to Stabroek News on Monday.

Williams had been nominated by The United Force to serve on the commission. He was also deputy mayor of Georgetown and had been mayor at one time. He died on the morning of January 30, while in hospital for heart related complications. Williams on December 1 last was admitted to the Caribbean Heart Institute, where he was hooked up to a heart and oxygen machine.
