More ‘tax sites’ to help public file returns

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expanded its ‘tax site’ operations to outlying areas such as Berbice and Linden to assist taxpayers with completing and filing tax returns.

The tax sites have become an annual exercise in the lead-up to the April 30 deadline for the submission of Income, Property, Capital Gains and Corporation Tax Returns and is geared to accommodate taxpayers who are unable to visit the GRA’s offices, a press release said.

The 2012 tax sites, which will be in operation until April 27, are both mobile and stationary and have been established at convenient locations away from the GRA offices in order to assist taxpayers with completing and submitting their returns.

Earlier in the month, sites were set up in Essequibo at the Anna Regina Multilateral School, Safeway Supermarket and the Charity market. Sites were also established at N&S Mattai and the City Mall in Georgetown, UG’s Turkeyen Campus, Qualfon, GT&T’s Beterverwagting office on the East Coast Demerara and Republic Bank, in Diamond, on the East Bank Demerara.

Sites were to be established in Linden at the Mackenzie Market Square on Wednesday, while they will be set up at Gordon’s Boutique in New Amsterdam and at Hafiz Laboratory in Rose Hall on Saturday and Monday, respectively.

Tax sites in Region Four are ongoing and will continue at N&S Mattai today and from April 23 to 27; it was hosted on Wednesday at the City Mall and will resume there from April 23 to 27; at UG’s Spicy Dish cafeteria on April 27 and at GT&T’s BV office and Republic Bank’s Diamond location on April 27. All tax sites begin operations at 9.30am and will close at 4pm from Monday to Thursday and from 9.30 am to 3pm on Fridays.

GRA Commissioner-General Khurshid Sattaur reiterated that “this year the GRA is expecting an increase in the submission of tax returns.”

The statutory deadline for the submission of Returns is Monday April 30 and taxpayers are urged to make use of the tax sites to avoid the congestion associated with last minute submissions.

Sattaur is further reminding the public that the benefits of submitting returns by the statutory deadline include the avoidance of unnecessary delays when obtaining Liability Statements and Compliance Certificates for the disposal or transfer of property and for tender purposes. For more information the public is invited to call the GRA Tax Hotline on telephone number 227-6060.
