Community service for stroke victim found with ganja

An elderly man was yesterday fined $3,000 and sentenced to do two weeks community service after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.

Fitzroy Devin, 59, was sentenced by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Devin pleaded admitted to having five grammes of cannabis in his possession on April 19, 2012. He said that he ate and drank the substance.

During the hearing, the magistrate noted Devin’s mannerisms and enquired whether he had a stroke. He replied in the affirmative. Later, in determining the sentence, the magistrate took into consideration Devin’s age and condition, among other factors.
