Man gets 14 days for kicking pregnant reputed wife

A man was ordered to serve a 14-day sentence yesterday for unlawfully wounding his reputed wife who is pregnant.

Kerwin Dash received the jail sentence when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court accused of unlawfully wounding Rhonda Phillips on April 19.

Dash was also accused of using threatening language towards her on the same date. He pleaded guilty to the unlawful wounding charge but maintained his innocence on the use of threatening language towards Phillips.

According to the particulars of the case, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey said the defendant is the reputed husband of Phillips and on the day in question he confronted her and instructed her not to sell her goods. She refused to listen to him and he threatened to kill her. Phillips became afraid and made a report to the police station.

On her way back from the station Dash once again confronted her and this time he kicked her into a concrete fence. A medical certificate was subsequently obtained and it noted that the virtual complainant is pregnant.

In delivering her sentence the magistrate said that the mitigating factor was that he pleaded guilty while the aggravating factors are that he kicked her while she is pregnant and that can have far reaching consequences. In addition, he showed no remorse for his actions.

Dash has to appear in court again on April 30 for the threatening language matter to be heard.
