Technicians rushed to Lethem over power woes

Technicians from the coast have been rushed into Lethem to assess the condition of the two main generating sets at the power company which mal-functioned last weekend.

The community and neighbouring villages have been experiencing power outages since Sunday after the two generators mal-functioned.

A smaller engine has since been put into operation but only powers sections of  Lethem  over six-hour periods.

Regional Chairman Wilson Larantino told Stabroek News last evening that the technicians will be able to determine the extent of the problem today, noting that the situation should be remedied within the next two days.

Residents of the area told Stabroek News last evening that they were concerned that no one at the power company or the regional administration has said anything to them as regards the situation being remedied.

They said that many businesses, mainly the smaller entities have been operating at a loss since Sunday while persons have been relying on the services of their small generators to power their homes.

The community has in the past experienced power outages for several days and residents noted last evening that poor maintenance as well as a lack of oversight by the power company board has been contributing to their woes.

Two years ago the residents had protested a similar situation after the power company ran out of fuel.
