Mount Sinai man jailed for ganja trafficking

Mark Anthony Jones of Patrick Dam, Mount Sinai, Berbice, was sentenced to three years imprisonment after he was found guilty of trafficking 99 grammes of cannabis sativa.

Jones, 46, was also fined $118,000, said to be three times the street value of the narcotics. Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, led the evidence of Cadet Officer Dufu, who on January 8 last, during a mobile patrol with a party of policeman, observed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner along Patrick Dam.

However, when they were about to stop the defendant, he dropped a bag, which was subsequently picked up by the police rank.  On opening the paper parcel, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the illegal plant were discovered.

Jones was arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, where the portions of the plant were weighed and he was charged.
