Man charged over Moleson Creek ganja bust

Jaikarran Singh, the man that police say was held at Moleson Creek, in Berbice, with over 12 kilogrammes of cannabis, was yesterday arraigned on a charge of narcotics trafficking.

Singh appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was remanded to jail after pleading not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that Singh was intercepted on Wednesday with 12.75 kilogrammes of cannabis, after police ranks stopped and searched a minibus around 12:30pm at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.

Singh was represented by attorney Michael Summersault, whose bid for bail was not countenanced since he could not present any special circumstances for his client to be released as is required in such cases. Summersault was further cautioned when he attempted to cite illness as a reason for bail, with the Magistrate informing him that the special reason should apply to the offence and not the offender.

Singh was subsequently remanded to prison until May 17, when the case will be called at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
