The woman who was driving one of the cars in  Sunday night’s two-car smash-up at Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, that claimed the life of 23-year-old Raymond Madray, was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday while four others remain hospitalized.

Geeta Persaud, 35, of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, the driver, suffered a crushed right ankle.

Meanwhile, twenty-seven-year-old Permaul Madray of Bennett Dam, East Bank Berbice; Satyanand ‘Kevin’ Persaud, 24, of Essequibo; his girlfriend 18-year old Rashana Jarawala of Berbice and Kevin Williamson of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice all remain patients at the institution and are said to be improving.

An elated Geeta Persaud said: “They did a surgery to build back my ankle and now they put a set of bolts and nuts inside and they said to visit the Port Mourant Hospital to receive treatment.”

When asked about what transpired that night Geeta Persaud, driver of motorcar PHH 8004, told Stabroek News that she was being treated to dinner by Babita and her husband Kevin Williamson as a part of Mother’s Day celebrations.

She said that they went to dinner at Rosignol and were returning when the accident occurred.

“I was cruising coming back when we see this car speeding down the road so I pulled in the corner and tried to allow them to pass but then all I hear was bang and I blacked out,” she recounted.

The injured woman told this newspaper that when she regained consciousness she saw a group of men with a blade cutting open her side of the car and when she tried to move she was pinned to the vehicle by the steering wheel.

She stated that as a result of being pinned down by the steering wheel of her car she is suffering severe shoulder pains and some sort of head injury as well since she bled through her nose.

She said that doctors at GPH told her that the impact of the vehicles caused her to suffer severe injuries but with the medications they are administering she will recover.

The other survivors are expected to be discharged from the institution as early as today.

According to reports, the younger Madray was driving his car, PFF 9723 east and was negotiating a turn when he collided with the other car which was proceeding in the opposite direction. It was also reported that Madray was speeding and lost control of his vehicle while making the turn at Cotton Tree.

A post-mortem that was scheduled to be performed on  Madray was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances and according to his mother she has been assured by the police that it will be done today.
