High winds cause power system shut down

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has received several reports about broken utility poles along the East Coast Demerara as a result of the high winds experienced yesterday afternoon.

GPL, in a press release, said this resulted in a 60Hz shutdown of the Demerara System.

Reports of broken poles have emanated from Mon Repos, Enmore, Mahaica and Mahaicony, the release said. It added that there was also a fault on the feeder supplying power to Prashad Nagar, Subryanville, Kitty, Alberttown and Queenstown.

GPL said it was working to restore power to all the affected areas and pleaded with members of the public to avoid fallen wires and to report any network fault in their area, while urging the public to be alert as high winds continue.
