Two Chenapau men killed in boat accident

The bodies of two Chenapau, Region Eight men, who were involved in a boat accident along the Potaro River in the wee hours of Tuesday morning were recovered the following day in the waterway.

Dead are Joseph Marco, 22, and Dwayne William, 20, both of Chenapau Mission which is located on the Potaro River in Region Eight.

According to the police, the two men, along with one Donald Andrews and two other persons were travelling in a boat which was driven by Marco when it struck an object and toppled.

Andrews was subsequently rescued and he was taken to the Mahdia Hospital for medical attention. The two other persons escaped injury and are safe, according to the police.

A relative of Marco told Stabroek News last evening that several persons in the Chenapau area had organized a post-Mother’s Day event on Monday, which lasted way into the night.

She said Marco, who was her cousin, and William, had agreed to transport several persons farther down the Potaro River to the community of Karisparu.

She said it was while along the journey that the incident occurred and contact was established with his family, including his mother, who live at Mahaica on the East Coast Demerara.

Family members later travelled to the area after receiving information about the incident.

The two men were buried yesterday at Chenapau.
