Scalped corpse on Corentyne identified as US-based Guyanese

The scalped corpse that was found on the Corentyne late last month has been identified as a US- based Guyanese who had returned to Guyana on holiday after being awarded a huge insurance settlement.

A senior police officer told Stabroek News that the man, Abdul Majid and his wife visited Guyana sometime last month and they had rented a car which was taking them around. Stabroek News was told that the man’s wife has since returned to the US. She had reportedly told the man’s relatives that he had gone to Suriname for a visit. The rented car was returned to its owner by a relative of the woman and police have since taken it into custody.

A brother of the man travelled to Guyana recently and identified the body as that of the man but it is not clear if anyone wasarrested locally. The officer pointed out that the case would have to be investigated collaboratively since the wife is no longer in Guyana and international assistance from the US would be needed.

The body of the man was found with a missing scalp and other injuries at the Number 56 Village, Corentyne foreshore on April 28.

Police had said in a press release that the man was discovered around 7.40 am. The victim wore a silver ring on the left ring finger and was clad in multi-coloured shorts.
