Miner with gunshot wound attempted suicide, police say

Police say that the 46-year old miner, who was discovered by family members with a gunshot wound to his right side abdomen on Sunday, had attempted suicide.

Kenneth Melville, originally from Barima/Waini, Region One was staying at his sister’s home at 38 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo when he attempted to take his life while family members were at church.  A senior police official told Stabroek News that the Melville attempted suicide after he had a domestic dispute with his partner, resulting in them separating.

Relatives said that the man showed no sign of depression before they left for church. He remains a patient of Georgetown Public Hospital’s (GPH) Intensive Care Unit where he said to be in a stable condition.

After the discovery Melville was rushed to the Hospital where he was x-rayed before undergoing an emergency operation to have the bullet removed.

Melville’s sister Carlotta Melville, who is a licensed firearm holder, had told Stabroek News that her brother had moved to Tuschen to live with another sister about two weeks ago after he ended his relationship with a woman.

She described the duo’s relationship as a rocky one that involved the police on several occasions and claimed that a few days ago the woman had threatened her brother telling him, “you gon see what gon come your  way.”
