Sophia ‘known character’ remanded over umbrellas larceny

A 35-year-old Sophia man wanted in connection with a previous offence was remanded yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a simple larceny charge.

Dexter Conway when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry pleaded not guilty after hearing that he on May 1  stole 60 umbrellas valued $102,000 from Jiang Xiushua.

According to the facts of the charge on the day in question at around 10:58 am the defendant went into the virtual complainant’s store and picked up a carton containing a number of umbrellas and walked out of the store. An alarm was subsequently raised and he was held by the business’s security and then handed over to the police.

Initially, police prosecutor Lionel Harvey had not objected to bail but then recalled that the defendant was wanted in connection with another matter which is currently before the court and reversed his stand to state that he objected to the defendant’s bail on that ground as well as that he is a known character to the police.

Conway will return to court in June 6, 2012.
