Government is stymieing local democracy

Dear Editor,

I have noticed in one of the daily newspapers that the government now wants to stymie the work of the Parliament by appealing the decision of the Chief Justice on the matter of the composition of parliamentary committees.

The government has already stymied local democracy by removing the democratically elected members of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and installing Interim Management Committees comprising all PPP/C members without first consulting with stakeholders and the opposition political parties.

Only on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 the Minister of Local Government and team came to the Civic Centre, Belvedere, Corentyne and imposed Interim Management Committees without consultation with stakeholders or the opposition political parties.

When the Minister of Local Government was asked why the opposition had not been contacted to have an input into this exercise, his reply was that he did not have to contact the opposition leader.

Look at the government boards and commissions; they are not balanced in terms of the seats given to the opposition parties.  Mr Nandlall should look at this.

Yours faithfully,
W Hope
