Man accused of hammering woman misses court date

The man who is accused of stabbing and hammering a mother of ten failed to appear at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was expected to answer to three charges after he suffered a relapse and had to be readmitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

On May 27, Aubrey Peters allegedly stabbed 38-year-old Sharon Howell at their Freeman Street, East La Penitence home, multiple times including to her shoulder, neck, stomach and head. Peters also hammered her about her head using the claw of the hammer.

Peters, who had been in a relationship with the woman for almost two years and who is the father of the woman’s youngest child—a one-year-old girl—was believed to have later ingested a poisonous substance at his sister’s home at Diamond on the East Bank Demerara and he was also at the GPH.

Stabroek News was made to understand that the man was discharged from the hospital on June 4 and was taken to the Brickdam Police Station. There, he reportedly collapsed and had to be taken back to the GPH for further treatment.

Meanwhile, in HDU of the GPH, Howell was seen sitting in an upright position, happily communicating with her relatives through signs. She was given a book on which she attempted to write notes to her family since she is still unable to speak. The woman laughed joyfully when spoken to as her two siblings looked on.

Other friends agreed that her will to survive had amazed them and added that they were happy to see her recovering so quickly.  This newspaper was made to understand that the attack had stemmed from plans Howell was making to return to Barbados.
