Chopped NWD teen said to be improving

The 16-year-old girl who was brutally chopped with a cutlass by her lover at Big Creek Backdam, North West District (NWD) last month has been transferred to the Female Medical Ward of the Georgetown Hospital.

The girl had been a patient of the Intensive Care Unit since she was air- dashed from Port Kaituma Hospital to the Georgetown Hospital on May 22 and was on life support.

Her condition however improved somewhat and she was transferred to the HDU on May 28.  When Stabroek News contacted a source close to the investigation, it was revealed that she was again transferred on Tuesday and has regained consciousness.

The source stated that the teen is now opening her eyes and acknowledging persons around her. However, she is still unable to verbally communicate, the source pointed out.

The girl, according to officials, sustained a gaping wound about six inches long to her head in addition to numerous chops about the body.  This newspaper understands that the girl’s mother and father are unable to travel to the city to see her. Meanwhile, efforts this newspaper made to confirm whether or not the suspect had been arrested proved futile.

The chopping, which occurred around midnight on May 20, came after the suspect reportedly caught the teen in a compromising position with Junior Joseph, a 22-year-old employee of the dredge operation. Joseph was chopped to death during the incident.

He began working for the suspect a few months ago.
